Chongqing is the only municipality directly under the Central Government in Western China. As an important central city of China, Chongqing is the economic center at the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, an important modern manufacturing base of China, comprehensive transport hub in the southwest China and a pilot reform city targeting coordinated rural and urban development through reforms in all sectors.
In June 2007, approved by the State Council, the National Development and Reform Commission formally approved Chongqing as a pilot reform city targeting coordinated rural and urban development through reforms in all sectors.
- In December 2008, the first inland bonded port zone of China was set up in Chongqing.
- In February 2009, Chongqing was listed in the 5 central cities of China; Chongqing is the only one in mid-western China.
- In February 2010, China’s biggest comprehensive bonded zone was established in Xiyong Park, Chongqing.
- In June 2010, the “3rd New Area” of China– Chongqing Liangjiang New Area was established.
- In July 2014, approved by the State Council, Chongqing established the Complete Vehicle Import Port, the first one in China’s western inland area.
Economic Overview - Famous auto city in China
There are 32 automotive manufacturers in Chongqing with an annual production capacity of 4 million units, including 14 automobile manufacturers and 18 specialty vehicle manufacturers. Chongqing has created the automotive industrial cluster with “1+10+1000”, which means 1 leading group “Changan Group (Changan, Changan Ford and Changan Suzuki)”, 10 whole vehicle companies including Qingling Motors, SAIC-IVECO Hongyan, DFSK, Lifan Motors, Brilliance Shineray, SAIC-GM-Wuling, BAIC Yinxiang, and 1000 OEM parts manufacturers.
In 2014, the gross output of Chongqing automotive industry reached 2.63 million units with a year on year growth of 22.3%, which was 15 percentage points higher than national average. The output accounted for more than 11% in China’s total production and ranked no.1 nationwide. The GDP of industrial enterprises above designated size in Chongqing reached RMB 384.7 billion, with a year on year growth of 20%.
The administrative area of Chongqing is 82,400 sq km and the population is 33 million. It has a vast local market and powerful radiation ability on the neighboring provinces and cities, covering a peripheral market with a population of over 300 million.
Rapidly growing economy
Since Chongqing became a municipality, the annual average growth rate of GDP and investment in fixed assets has always remained above 10% and around 20% respectively, keeping the economic growth over a relatively long period. The total GDP in Chongqing in 2014 reached RMB 1426.54 billion, increased by 10.9%; Investment in fixed assets reached RMB 1322.38 billion, increased by 18.0%; the actual utilization of foreign capital has exceeded USD 10 billion for 4 consecutive years.
Foreign capital: coming in a continuous stream
Chongqing has established economic and trade relations with over 180 countries and regions. Great Britain, Canada, Japan, Denmark, Hungary, Philippine, Ethiopia, Holland and Cambodia have established consulates in Chongqing; Austria, Belgium and Germany have established agencies of chambers of commerce here. About 200 Fortune 500 enterprises, including Ford, HP, BP, Ericsson, ABB, Lafarge, Carrefour, Metro, Isuzu Motors and Suzuki Motor, have established their presence in Chongqing.
Sound industrial base
Chongqing is one of the six old industrial bases in China, with a complete range of industries and strong supporting capacity. Industry is the dominant force in the economy of Chongqing: in 2014, there were nearly 1,000 new industrial enterprises above designated size, and the total added value of industrial enterprises above designated size increased by 12.6%, 4.3 percentage points higher than national average.
The “6+1” pillar industries, i.e. automobiles, electronic information, equipment manufacturing, natural gas chemistry, materials and energy, textile and labor-intensive industries, have been developed in Chongqing.
As one of the cities with the richest tourism resources in China, Chongqing is listed among the “World Top 10 Destinations 2012” on the website of in Fengjie – the deepest and longest Tiankeng and geofracture in the world; Hechuan Fishing Town – relic of ancient battlefield that changed the Frommer’s, a famous American travel guidebook. It now has 136 tourist attractions that reach level A, among which there are 6 5A tourist attractions, 48 4A tourist attractions and 46 3A tourist attractions; Chongqing also has 1 World Natural Heritage site and 1 World Cultural Heritage site.
Among the well-known tourist attractions, there are Three Gorges – the only grand gorge in the world which can be viewed in a luxury cruiser on Yangtze River; Dazu Rock Carvings – World Cultural Heritage; Wulong Tiansheng Three Bridges – World Natural Heritage; Tiankeng and Geofracture Scenic Area history of Europe; Fuling Baiheliang – the only ancient hydrological station that has been preserved completely in the world, to mention only a few. Benefiting from the mountains and water, Chongqing has a diversity of world-class geothermal energy resources of springs, as well as 1,600 years of spring history. In 2012, Chongqing was granted the “World’s Hot Spring Capital” in The 65th General Assembly and International Scientific Congress of The World Federation of Hydrotherapy and Climatotherapy.
What’s more, Chongqing also has excellent tourism reception facilities and superior services. There are 266 tourist hotels with star ratings in Chongqing, among which there are 22 five-star hotels, 55 four-star hotels and 136 three-star hotels; Among the 510 travel agencies, 48 are outbound travel agencies; Besides, there are 31 five-star Yangtze River cruisers to meet various needs of tourists from different countries and regions.
